The Last Days of the Wake Men is the fourth science fiction adaptation created from the War of the Worlds universe.
The Martians were on the rampage all across Queen Victoria's Britain. Nothing man possessed could stop them. But then the huge fighting machines began to slow down and lumber to a halt. One by one, the Martians inside the giant machines began to die. Soon there were just scattered and failing remnants of the once-mighty tripods wandering here and there among the derelict monuments. Even the red weed was dying as Mother Earth began to reclaim her own. The human survivors became emboldened and they emerged from the hiding places intent on fighting back.
Sister Ciara has a high powered hunting rifle, a lot of ammunition, and a robust attitude problem towards Martians. With two trusted odd-ball accomplices, she will complete her task. Victorian London lies in ruins under the onslaught of the Martian fighting machines. In turn, the Martians begin to succumb to the many blights Mother Earth can offer. Soon, most of the diseased aliens are dead. The tripod fighting machines lay dormant in vast numbers amid the post-apocalyptic landscape. However, for the human survivors of the Sewer Sanctuary, the surface is still unsafe. The threat remains of a few Martian survivors. They are still hunting inside their colossal machines. They still need to feed while the humans still need to forage amid the ruins. It has become a game of cat and mouse. The surviving humans are becoming adaptable and more resourceful. Among them is a devoted lady of the cloth. A middle-aged nun from County Mayo, Ireland. Our Lady of Martian Slayers.
The Martians are moving northwards, conquering Queen Victoria’s Britain. The hideous alien beings, in their great tripod fighting machines, kill and destroy everything that stands in their path.
In the Victorian Fenlands, Colonel Blake has assembled a militia from his Cambridgeshire Yeomanry and forcefully conscripted civilian help where necessary.
Colonel Blake, of the Wake, oversees his bold ad-hoc engineering plan with help of a railway system that is operating on borrowed time. He must complete his plan before the giant tripod machines arrive and destroy the precious rail line.
Everything must be properly prepared. Quickly and as efficiently as possible. Once done, the Wake Men will confront the confounded Martians with a few surprises of their own.
1. The Martians are desperate.
2. Most are riddled with disease.
3. Those that remain are disorganised.
The alien invaders are less formidable as they struggle to reach Scotland's border. Some are trying to abandon Earth via towering barrel constructions. This great apparatus can fire lifeboats back to Mars. One such assembly is in Dumfriesshire where a number of Martian fighting machines have been destroyed with others driven back. The importance of the giant barrel forces the desperate Martians to keep attempting the recapture of the giant escape mechanism. But the new government in Edinburgh have other plans.
The French professor, who escaped from Essex aboard the Southend Belle paddle steamer, is in Edinburgh. His life was saved by HMS Thunder Child's valiant charge. Now he wishes to do something in return. He has a diabolical plan which he has put before the governing powers. He wants humanity to go on the attack. Something colossal that could bring about a total apocalypse of all the Martians.
It is winter and England's New Forest is in the grip of a vigorous blizzard. Why do summer flowers quickly grow and radiantly bloom for mere seconds during a winter blizzard? Why do the same flowers quickly wither and die with equal speed? Why did the late Mr. Ballantyne continuously speak of such radiance caused by the presence of strange little fairy folk? Why did no one believe him?
Air Mechanic First Class Maloney was too enthusiastic for his own good when working on the WWI F2B biplanes. He learnt everything possible about Morse Code transmitting, clock code referencing and photography during his spare time. All the ingredients for a flight observer.
But Maloney did not want to go up in an aircraft and perform such duties. He was happy with his feet on the ground and being a good air mechanic. However, the squadron were suddenly short of observers and the powers that be thought Maloney would make for a good acting observer. Maloney could not side step the mission he was destined for. His twentieth birthday would be a day he would never forget.
Sergeant McGrew is a rough-cut man from Belfast. His crew are everything to him. New recruits are regarded with superstition. There are reasons why. Four of the five-man crew, have been with the tank commander for over four years. McGrew and his surviving troopers have witnessed many traumatic events, including the tragic deaths of various friends along the bloody journey through World War II. From North Africa, Italy and finally Northern Europe. It is now early February 1945. A few days prior to the Reichswald Forest Campaign. They have a new recruit and once again the superstitious feelings of dread and loss begin to grow in McGrew and his seasoned trooper’s minds. Are the veterans going to witness another recruit perish before the finishing line of a costly war? Or will the likeable young trooper make it?
